Big Tree Wayside

Short on time but desperate to get up close to a colossal redwood? Then the Big Tree Wayside is a must stop on your way through Prairie Creek Redwood State Park. This giant is one of the largest in the park at roughly 300 feet in height and a circumference of 74 feet, it’s estimated to be about 1500 years old.

There is a viewing platform and signage located around the tree in order to protect the roots. Getting to the Big Tree is a super easy stroll from the parking area which is located just north of the Prairie Creek Visitor Center off of the Newton B Drury Parkway. The wayside is very popular and can get quite congested during the high tourist season. Note that RV parking is limited. Toilets are located at the parking area.

Several other trails cross by Big Tree including The Cathedral Trail and the Circle Trail which takes about 15 minutes, it can be accessed next to Big Tree.
