Not far from the Caesar Creek State park Visitor’s Center on Clarksville Road you will find Flat Fork Ridge Recreation Area. There is plenty of parking along with picnic tables, a scenic overlook of the lake and playground for the kids, restrooms area also available.
The trail begins just off the main parking area at a set of stairs that connects to the Perimeter Loop Trail. The portion to Horseshoe Falls and return is 2.4 miles.
The trail follows along the shoreline of the lake and is relatively level with a few exceptions. The path takes you through the forest until you come to a clearing at the emergency spillway. Before long you are back in the trees again. Be aware that because you are in the shaded wooded area the trail can be muddy in spots following any rain. The trail splits where you have the option to continue along the main path or can follow the trail up along the ridge line. The two trails eventually come together again.
As you near the falls you will hear the sound of rushing water below and soon come to an overlook where you can stop to get a glimpse of the falls from above.
When you reach the 103 feet long suspension bridge you are almost there, you will see a sign pointing the way to the falls.
The falls are just a short walk downstream from the bridge.
On a warm day the stream is a great place to cool your toes!
Before heading back to Flat Fork Ridge you take the bridge across the stream and follow the trail for a bit to view the falls from a different perspective.
Don’t forget to pack a lunch, when we returned to Flat Fork Ridge we stuck around to enjoy a picnic surrounded by the trees and the sounds of birds singing, afterward we took a stroll down to the scenic lake overlook!
On our way back home we stopped at Cedar Cliff Falls at Indian Mound Reserve near Cedarville, the falls and wildflowers were stunningly beautiful, Here is the link to read more of our visit there.
